Golden Sun Dark Dawn E3 Demo
Here you'll find
coverage of the E3 demos of Dark Dawn.
What a time that
must have been... all the excitement over a new game...
Followed by the
crushing disappointment and bitter tears when it failed to live up to
expectations.
Ugh, who invited you?
Hey, now, we'll
have none of that negativity here.
This is a Dark Dawn
bullying free zone.
Hmph, I'm merely
stating facts, that's all.
Ahem! That aside, we
have some interesting content here.
At last, an
explanation.
Now that I have an
excuse, can everyone get off my back?
...
Shame they never
released a downloadable version of the demos.
Fortunately, all the
demo data is still in the game and accessible.
These images are shown on the top screen during the demos.
The battle demo involves a three round battle.
Round 1 is against 2 Flutter Seeds and 2 Rat Skulks.
Round 2 is against 1 Skeleton and 1 Dread Hound.
Round 3 is against the Ogre Titan.
After clearing the battle rounds, you will get to proceed to the demo version of Patcher's Place. You are unable to use the shops or the sanctum, or leave the town. The Psynergy Training Grounds are also closed off. A few NPCs in the final game are absent from the demo. Some of the demo NPCs have different lines to the final game. The cutscene with Patcher will not occur, but there will be more on that further down.

Since the shops and inn are closed for the demo, Patcher will have different dialogue, even when talking to him behind the counter. At no point does he talk as if the cutscene had occurred.
Oven and bookshelf descriptions differ to the final game.
Attempting to leave the town the way you came in will bring up this message.
As for the Patcher cutscene, it is true that the cutscene does not trigger when you walk into Patcher's Place. However, an alternate version of the Patcher's Place cutscene does exist in the E3 demo script files. There is no way to access this cutscene ingame. Getting it to show in the game requires modifying the game's script files.
Salanewt from Golden Sun Hacking Community has made a video of the cutscene which can be viewed here.

Karis | Patcher's Place, hmm? It's been a long time since I've stopped through here. | Finally, Patcher's Place! I'm always amazed by how many things
Patcher packs in here for sale. |
Tyrell | Me too... | Uh, yeah. It's amazing. Now get me out of here. |
Karis | What's wrong, Tyrell? You don't look happy to be here. | That's right. I forgot that Tyrell isn't welcome at Patcher's Place. |
Karis |
Matthew thinks you seem OK, but
something’s wrong. I can tell. |
I have a feeling we need to be more on guard when bringing Tyrell in
here. If Patcher doesn't like Tyrell, I think getting angry is only going to add fuel to the fire! Who knows why Patcher has it out for Tyrell? But I think we're just going to have to deal with it. I have a feeling that everything's not going to be just dandy. Patcher has it out for Tyrell. |
Tyrell | It's nothing! I mean, I'm totally happy! Patcher's Place is full of neat stuff! I haven't seen it for a while! | Don't blame me. I didn't want to come back here. |
Tyrell | That's all it is! OK, Karis?! | Actually, I'm getting out of here before it's too late... |
Patcher | Welcome! I'm Patcher, and you're in my place! So, what can I do you for? | You three over there! I'm Patcher. This is my place. What can I do you for? |
Patcher | Hey! You're-! | Hey! You're-! |
Patcher | You're Isaac's kid! Matthew, right? | You're Isaac's kid! Matthew, right? (Yes) Well, Isaac's kid is welcome here anytime! (No) No? That's odd. I rarely forget a face. |
Patcher | You and your dad were just here yesterday. Bought some stuff too! What brings you back so soon? | Weren't you and your dad just here yesterday? What brings you back so soon? |
Patcher | Hmm. Not here with your father...? Odd. Where could Isaac be? | Hmm. Not here with your father...? Odd. Where could Isaac be? |
Karis | Hello, Patcher. | Hello again, Patcher! |
Patcher | Ivan's daughter, am I right? Karis? | Now, where do I know you from... Is she traveling with you, Matthew? (Yes) Really? Wait a minute. I remember who you are! You're Karis, Ivan's daughter! (No) No? Ah, now I remember! Isaac mentioned you yesterday. You're Karis, Ivan's daughter! |
Karis | That's right, Patcher. | That's right, Patcher. I've been visiting here on business from my father. |
Patcher | Hey - now it all makes sense. Your dad, Ivan, brought you kids here! |
Hmm. What a smart kid. Just like Isaac said. |
Karis | Er, no. | Uh-oh... |
Tyrell | Ha! That guy's all chin, no brain! He'll figure it out...! | Heh... Hi there, Patcher. |
Patcher | YOU! Garet's son! What are you doing in here? Come back to make MORE trouble in my place?! | YOU! Garet's son! What are you doing in here? Come back to make MORE trouble?! |
Tyrell | Trouble? Me? Here? That's ancient history, Patcher. Let's just forget that. | Trouble? Me? Here? That's ancient history! |
Patcher | Ancient history?! I remember it like it was yesterday! | Ancient history?! I remember it like it was yesterday! |
Patcher | Your stupid Psynergy nearly burned down my store! | Your stupid Psynergy nearly burned down my store! |
Patcher | I'm sick to my stomach just thinking about it. Finish up your business, and then get out, will ya? | I want you outta here! And you others - finish your shopping and be on your way! |
Karis | Is all this why you don't come here with us? | So that's why he can't stand you, Tyrell... |
Karis | You're never going to be OK coming here, are you! | You nearly burned down his store? Wow. |
Karis | You've caused trouble other places too, haven't you, Tyrell? | Is there anywhere you haven't made a mess of things, Tyrell? |
Karis | But you've got guts. I'll give you that...
Tyrell | What I did here happened forever ago! | What I did here happened forever ago! |
Tyrell | Why can't he just forget it?! It makes me feel terrible! I didn't mean to do it! | I didn't mean to do it! But Patcher never... ever...FORGETS! |
Karis | We can't just pretend he's going to be fine. We have to calm him
down fast! Yelling isn't helping! We need to calm him down! Oh, great. Now I have two friends falling apart on me. Help me calm him down! I'm not sure cheering will help matters now, Matthew. We need to calm him down! |
This is no time to just shrug and smile! We have to calm him down! Yelling isn't helping! We need to calm him down! Oh, great. Now I have two friends falling apart on me. Help me calm him down! I hope you're not cheering him on, Matthew! We need to calm him down! |
Karis | Hey! Just stop that! | Snap out of it, Tyrell! |
Tyrell | Ouch! | Ouch. That hurt. |
Karis | That should hurt, Tyrell! Throwing around your Psynergy for those from Vale is one thing... | I hope that DID hurt, Tyrell! It's pretty stupid, losing your temper like that! |
Karis | But showing it off in front of regular people isn't smart! | You might have scorched this whole place! |
Karis | You never learned to hide your Psynergy in public. Your mother never had a chance to tell you... | I...I'm sorry. But we Adepts aren't supposed to use our powers in public when we're just starting out! |
Karis | Your mother...died when you were so young, Tyrell. | It's our responsibility as Adepts to make sure we never hurt people! |
Karis | But WE'RE here for you! We're not going anywhere! So stop being so difficult! | Our fathers are concerned about how people view Psynergy! They must see it as helpful, not hurtful! |
Karis | When we head down the mountain, we won't be seeing many Adepts! | Burn your own reputation, if you must, but have a care for how that would impact Garet! |
Karis | So it'll be even more important to keep your Psynergy under wraps!
Tyrell | OK. Fine. | OK. Fine. |
Karis | Excuse me?! | What'd he say? I can't hear him. |
Tyrell | I heard you! Stop your howling! | I said, I heard you. So just drop it. |
Karis | No way! Not until I drill it into that head of yours, Tyrell! | You're going to hold it in check, Tyrell? |
Karis | No Psynergy in front of strangers anymore, OK?! | No Psynergy in front of strangers anymore, OK?! |
Tyrell | You're not the boss of me! | Now you're just starting to nag. |
Karis | Typical. Just typical. | Typical. Just typical. |
Tyrell | Now, don't be like that! | Oh, come on. Don't get insulted now. |
Tyrell | OK! No Psynergy in front of strangers! Now can we drop it, please?! | OK! No Psynergy in front of strangers! Now can we drop it, please?! |
Karis | Consider it dropped. | Consider it dropped. |
Karis | But we still have a problem. Patcher isn't about to give us much help now. | But we do have a problem. I doubt Patcher will give us any helpful information now. |
Tyrell | What do you think, Matthew? | What do you think we should do, Matthew? |
Karis | Always the reliable leader, aren't you, Matthew? So, stay the
course? Then we need to reach Kolima Forest. That means heading east! No need to be bossy, Matthew! We all agree that we need to head to Kolima Forest! So we'll have to head east. It's not so bad. Not when we have YOU as our leader! So, we're heading to Kolima Forest! And that means we need to head east! Way to step up! Just like your father always says: a leader always answers the call! So, leader, if we're still going to Kolima Forest, that means we go east! |
We should take it easy? Good idea. Maybe Patcher will see Tyrell in
a new light if we keep calm... Well, if you and I got angry, that would get Patcher's mind off Tyrell. But that seems risky... Well, maybe begging for Patcher to forgive Tyrell might help. But he seems pretty angry... We should stay in high spirits? Maybe Patcher would see Tyrell in a new light if we did that... |
Tyrell | When did you start acting so reliable, Matthew? You're making me look bad! | You guys really are looking out for me... I'm not sure if I deserve such good friends. |
Karis | Don't take it too hard, Tyrell. You're fine just as you are... | Oh, Tyrell. You know we like you just the way you are... He'll come around. |
Karis | Except for your troublemaking. | That is, if you can keep your fireballs under control. |
Tyrell | I'll pretend that I didn't hear that. | I'll pretend I didn't hear that. |
Karis | Well then, leader? Lead on! | Well then, leader? Lead on! |
So... yep. Tyrell's mother is fucking dead. Another interesting point is the emphasis on going to Kolima Forest, rather than obtaining the Roc Feather.
The second demo has you going through the Psynergy Training Grounds.
There is little to do here. The logs can be pushed, but the trees cannot be climbed and using growth on the sprout will do nothing. The ladder goes nowhere. The two NPCs here, who are different to the NPCs there in the final, cannot be talked to but some text still exists in the script file.
These are the Psynergy Training Grounds,
where you'll learn how to wield the
powers of a Warrior of Vale!
If you complete the training, you'll enter
the nearby dungeon as a reward!
We can't let just ANYBODY in there...
Now it's time for you to earn your own legendary reputation!
The trial itself cannot be accessed from here, and has to be accessed directly using the memory viewer.
After clearing the trial, you will then go on to a demo version of the Konpa ruins.
The demo sends you straight to the corridor.
You then have to use Move Psynergy on the gem in this room. After doing that, a cutscene plays.
The doors open up to a room with statues. Moving the statues to reach the other end of the room will clear the demo.
This room is in the demo too, since it appears in the cutscene. There's nothing to do here. The pillars can be examined but there is no text.
Clearing or failing the first parts of the demo will bring up these screens.
Leaving Patcher's Place by the south exit/clearing the Konpa ruins will bring up the demo end screen.
